External Event: Farm four showcases Latino/Latine agriculture in McHenry County

HARVARD – Learn the story behind an immigrant farmer made good and tour a thriving vegetable and fruit farm from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8.

This engaging bilingual event will take place at the farm of Jorge Guereca, 6710 S. Oak Grove Road, north of Harvard. Guereca, a proud Latino/Latine farm owner, will lead the tour and share insights about his journey and the challenges and triumphs of running a farm. The family-owned small business specializes in a diverse range of crops: including pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers, melons, and watermelons to onions, radishes, broccoli, peas, and more.

This family-friendly, outdoor event is open to all and does not require registration. It aims to provide a platform for learning, understanding, and supporting of local Latino/Latine farm owners. Participants are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to secure parking on-site before the tour commences at 6 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the event, creating a convivial atmosphere for fruitful conversations and connections.

"We are thrilled to bring the community together for this unique opportunity to engage with Jorge Guereca and gain a deeper understanding of the Latino/Latine agricultural landscape in McHenry County," said Raices Latinas Project Coordinator Zitlali Adame.
"By supporting local farmers like Jorge, we can foster economic growth and strengthen our community as a whole."

Raices Latinas is a groundbreaking coalition consisting of the Farmworker and Landscaper Advocacy Project – FLAP, Illinois Migrant Council, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, Center for Agrarian Learning at McHenry County College, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County and the McHenry County Historical Society. The organization was made possible last year through a grant by the Community Foundation for McHenry County.

Current and former migrant workers living in McHenry County are encouraged to share their stories, pictures and any artifacts with the historical society so we can build a permanent archive. For information, go to www.raiceslatinasmc.org.

Raíces Latinas presenta una visita al rancho de Jorge, un agricultor latino/latine en el condado de McHenry.

HARVARD - Raíces Latinas se complace en invitar a la comunidad a un cautivante recorrido por el rancho de Jorge, ubicado en 6710 S Oak Grove Rd en Harvard, IL. Este evento bilingüe tendrá lugar el jueves 8 de junio de 2023, y promete ser una experiencia memorable para todos los asistentes. Jorge Guereca, es un orgulloso propietario latino/latine de un rancho en el condado de McHenry, dirigirá la visita y compartirá sus impresiones sobre su trayectoria y los retos y triunfos de dirigir un negocio agrícola.

El rancho de Jorge, es conocido por su dedicación a los productos de calidad, es una pequeña empresa familiar especializada en una amplia gama de cultivos. Desde calabazas, calabacines, pepinos, melones y sandías hasta cebollas, rábanos, brócoli, guisantes y mucho más, los visitantes verán la amplitud de la excelencia agrícola cultivada por Jorge y su familia.

Nos acompañarán en este interesante viaje representantes de la estimada Fundacion Communitaria del Condado de McHenry, así como miembros de la coalición Raíces Latinas. El evento tiene como objetivo proporcionar una plataforma para el aprendizaje, la comprensión y el apoyo de los propietarios de ranchos locales latinos / latinas.

Este evento familiar al aire libre está abierto a todxs y no requiere inscripción. Se pide a los participantes que lleguen a las 5:30 PM para estacionar antes de que comience la visita a las 6:00 PM. Habrá comida y refrescos durante todo el acto, lo que creará un ambiente cordial para entablar conversaciones y contactos fructíferos.
