60th Anniversary Quilt Raffle

You are here

The McHenry County Historical Society's Heritage Quilters have crafted a special 60th Anniversary Quilt for our 2023 quilt raffle.

Dedicated in honor of MCHS founder Dorothy McEachren, all of the fabric used to craft this handstitched, 95-inch-square quilt was donated. The colorful Heritage Star pattern is appropriately historic. According to the Smithsonian Institution, Native American women embraced the Star quilt – the Star of Bethlehem, Lone Star, or Morning Star. But the Lakota tribe made the pattern its own.

"The star pattern of the quilts represents the Morning Star, a significant symbol in Lakota beliefs and ceremonial life," according to Emma I. Hansen, a cultural anthropologist and author.
The quilt drawing will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at the Main Beach Pavilion, 300 Lakeshore Drive, Crystal Lake, highlighting the Society's 60th anniversary party. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5, with all proceeds benefiting the McHenry County Historical Society & Museum. The winner need not be present to win.

Tickets may be purchased at the museum, during events, or online by clicking HERE.
It was McEachren who rallied local support for the idea of preserving county history, culture, and artifacts. More than 600 citizens joined the effort, and the Society received its charter on Nov. 26, 1963.
